A View from Minnesota
A View from Minnesota is a periodic newsletter I write to share updates with friends, colleagues, and family. It began as a regular email that I started to update friends in California on my life in Minnesota after Mary and I moved here from Silicon Valley in 2018, and it has grown over time to include people from various walks of life. Writing the newsletter was part of what inspired me to write my book, How I Found Myself in the Midwest, and I’ve since moved it here to Substack where it’s easier to manage.

What the newsletter covers
This newsletter covers three basic topics:
Insights and updates from news and events in Minnesota, a state that’s increasingly found itself on the national radar. I won’t pretend to be an unbiased narrator (I grew up here and love the place), but I’m not here just to cheerlead, either. I hope learning more about our state gives readers reason to consider this place, in all its exceptionalism and paradoxes, as anything but flyover country.
I share updates on our work at The Minnesota Star Tribune, where I serve at publisher. With an amazing team, we’re working to transform this 158-year old newspaper into a modern digital media company at a time of unprecedented headwinds in local news. It’s a journey full of purpose and we’re inspired by the challenge, which I share reflections on here.
Family updates and news about my wife’s Mary’s journey as the managing partner of Bread & Butter Ventures, a venture capital firm she started with her business partner, Brett Brohl, in Minneapolis. I’m even more unbiased about Mary - she’s amazing.
How often will you hear from me?
This periodic newsletter is, well, periodic. I don’t assume you want to need to hear from me every week, or even every month. The exception might be during book promotion window, please forgive me in advance! I’m thinking about once a quarter.
Please share!
If you know anyone you think would enjoy this newsletter, please pass it along.
Thanks for reading!
